This week, NBC29 Charlottesville broadcast a special report series on suicide. Each night, they featured a story about how suicide has impacted five residents in the Charlottesville area. In Ginger’s episode, she shared her son Austin’s struggles with depression, anxiety, ADD, and suicidal thoughts.
Sadly, Austin died by suicide in April 2017. We know that suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15- to 34-year-olds in Virginia and nationwide. Ginger uses Austin’s story to bring awareness to mental health and suicide in young people and to advocate for necessary change in our mental health care system. Austin’s experiences are the reason that Ginger joined the UniWellness team.
We created UniWellness because we care about students like Austin. It can be extremely difficult to receive the help and support you need while you’re away at school. We’re leveraging technology to make a difference in this area and to ensure that students have access to mental health care whenever and wherever it’s convenient for them.
