Governor Northam Announces Two Virginia Schools Selected to Participate in
Teen Mental Health First Aid Pilot Program

Last week, Governor Ralph Northam announced that two high schools in Virginia — one in Loudoun County and one in Charlottesville — are among eight in the nation to pilot the new Teen Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) program. Because existing MHFA trainings focus on adolescents and adults, the National Council for Behavioral Health and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation are leading this effort to design an MHFA specifically for high school teens.

Many college students are referred to off-campus mental health providers for many reasons. With UC Berkeley’s upcoming insurance provider change, local therapists are concerned that off-campus mental health services will become less accessible to students.
