You may be new to the idea of offering telemental healthcare. You may also be wondering what makes an online therapy session successful. A successful online therapy session starts with using the right online therapy platform.

Unfortunately, not all online therapy platforms are created equal.

In order to have a meaningful online therapy session with your student, the platform you use should include the following features:

  • HIPAA-compliant
    • You want to make sure that your patient information isn’t going anywhere. Whatever is discussed or written down should be safe, secure, and encrypted.

  • User-friendly
    • The platform should be easy to use for both the practitioner and the patient. They shouldn’t have to struggle finding the call function or messaging feature. They should also have access to training materials so they fully understand how to use the platform to enhance the therapeutic process.

  • Quality video & audio
    • Therapy requires the exchange of communication. This can’t happen without quality video and audio! Your platform should look and sound like you are face-to-face in the same room.

  • No geographical boundaries
    • In most states, current licensing laws only allow mental health professionals to practice in the state that they are licensed. Some states have created regional partnerships to allow professionals to practice across nearby state lines, so it’s important to check your state’s laws before accepting patients who live in a different state.

  • Web and mobile branded apps
    • Your platform should look like your own product. It should have your branding, color scheme, logos, language, and customized features.

  • Customized intake process
    • Everyone’s intake process looks a little different. Your platform should make it easy for you to implement this process.

  • Scheduled appointments or crisis mode
    • Your platform should make it easy for you to schedule appointments. It should also make it easy for you to create an (optional) “on-call” crisis function outside of regular business hours.

  • Integrates with other systems
    • Your platform should streamline the therapeutic process, not stress you out. For your convenience, your platform should be able to communicate with the other sites and apps you use on a daily basis.

  • Ability to send and receive files
    • Sometimes counselors give their students a worksheet for “homework.” Sometimes they need their student to sign a document. Sometimes students want to share a file with their counselor. Your platform should make file-sharing easy and secure.

Our goal is to reduce barriers by connecting students to mental health care whenever and wherever because every person matters and every illness hurts
